Welp, I let this newsletter fall by the wayside. But, I’ve got a whole list of excuses for you - and a few of them are really good ones too.
A Quick Rebrand
Given the lapse since my previous edition of this newsletter, you very likely won’t notice the name change of this publication.
Welcome to Designedly Miscellaneous, aka an intentional assortment of writing.
One new piece is a focused subsection dedicated to my pop culture writing - appropriately called The Pop Culture Guide. It once existed as its own newsletter, but that didn’t make sense as I evaluated how to better pull all this content I create together.
Now, it’s a subsection. If you want to subscribe to that, you can do so by selecting the subscription under your profile image.
But wait, what about marketing and freelance tips?
Oh, don’t you worry. I’ll still be writing about that in some regards. Particularly a new one coming up soon about why I’m about to go back to a full-time 40-hour salary job in October.
What else can you expect?
Well, time will tell, but one thing is for sure - this new random title will fit the bill as my umbrella for writing expands.
Here Are Some Good Excuses For Not Writing Recently
Writing Elsewhere
I spent the last few months doing a fair amount of client work, but also a new gig as a contributing writer at Movieweb.com, and writing on my other Substack newsletter Choosing Eco.
The writing at MovieWeb is the most exciting as it’s given me a (paid!) outlet to write more about movies and tv.
Here are a few of my favorites I’ve written since starting there in June.
MovieWeb has allowed me to write about comic book movies, classic actors, modern TV shows (The Sandman, Only Murders In The Building), best of lists, and analysis of shows.
It is really fun, and a good way for me to stretch my creative muscles.
Family Time
Summer is busy. Especially as a parent with kids around a bit more. Camps weren’t always full-time, sometimes not scheduled at all, shorter days, and other random things.
I spent eight weeks coaching my son’s soccer team twice a week, with another day of skills development on the weekend.
We took a few trips with extended family.
It was great. I wouldn’t change that prioritizing of my family for anything. I’m eating up time with my kids - particularly when they’re still in the stage of liking us being with them!
What’s Next?
I have about a month before I start my new job. During that time I’ll be cranking out articles for MovieWeb. I have a novel I’ve been working on for years that currently is sitting on a shelf gathering dust as I read books about how to write fiction better, mainly as a means to tell myself I can actually do this.
You can also expect a few more entries here.
So, I thank you for your interest in this publication at all. I thank you for your patience between editions. And finally, I thank you for continuing your interest. I hope you’ll continue to find something of value and interest to you.
Cheers.
